If I Had A Boat

by Lyle Lovett

Some joyful lunacy from Lyle Lovett here. I’m all about the deep, meaningful lyrics and interesting chords, but sometimes the right thing is a three-chord ditty. It’s just a fun song!

Drop D tuning again - DADGBD, capo at 2nd fret for the key of E

No chord charts this week. I’ve used these shapes many times - have a look at another video!

I’ll continue to talk in roman numerals* but the actual chords are: I - E; V - B; IV - A. Yep, three chords.

* if there’s interest, I’ll do a little primer on understanding chords by their position in the scale, rather than by name. It helps a lot, especially when you get into open tunings, where traditional chord shapes get a bit wiggly
