Lungs

by Townes Van Zandt

Fill the sky with streams and cries? Sorry Townes…

Anyway, here’s a song I thought lent itself well to Clawhammer style. Why more guitar players don’t use this technique is a mystery to me. It’s great fun to play, sounds much more complicated than it really is, and always turns heads.

Sawmill tuning again - DGDGCD, though we’re playing off the 5th (A, if you like) string, for the key of G.

As usual I’ll refer to chords by their roman numeral*, but for the perfect pitchers among us: I - G; bVII - F; V - D; and the bIII - IV turnaround is Bb - C.

Next week - “Mr Vertigo” - a John Robert Wood original

Here’s the link to the Steve Baughman course

* if there’s interest, I’ll do a little primer on understanding chords by their position in the scale, rather than by name. It helps a lot, especially when you get into open tunings, where traditional chord shapes get a bit wiggly
