Who doesn’t love a Nick Drake tune? There are lots of covers of this, but I’ve never yet seen anyone approach it finger style. I’m quite pleased with how well the piano figure from the record sits on the guitar - I’ll talk about that in the companion video - and of course, it’s a great one to sing.
We’re in the classic Nick Drake tuning: CGCFCE (capo’d at 2nd fret for DADGDF#). It’s an unusual tuning, or at least I’m not aware of it being widely used outside of his music (stay subscribed for a Tom Waits favourite where I’ll use it). I suspect I’ll be doing a few ND songs along the way.
As usual I’ll refer to chords by their roman numeral*, but for the perfect pitchers among us: I - D; IV - G; V - A and ii - Em.
Next week - “Solsbury Hill” by Peter Gabriel
* if there’s interest, I’ll do a little primer on understanding chords by their position in the scale, rather than by name. It helps a lot, especially when you get into open tunings, where traditional chord shapes get a bit wiggly
